How to Tell if Your Double-Pane Windows Need to be Replaced

Published on

New double-pane windows give you a variety of incentives for homeowners in North Carolina, one being improved energy efficiency. Whether you’re researching online or with a specialist at a showroom, energy efficiency is a critical factor in the purchasing process for replacement windows. Double-pane windows are a great product if you’re looking for better efficiency.

A lot of new double-pane windows contain argon, a colorless, nontoxic gas that is denser than air, which provides additional insulation from heat and cold.. However, if you note that your windows have become “foggy” or if they have developed condensation, you may have developed a larger leak and the gas has been substituted with moisture. There are two things that you can do to check to see if this is what’s occurred:

  1. Clean the exterior and interior portion of your glass to ensure that the condensation or fog you’re looking at is in between the glass, not on the glass.
  2. If you find out that the moisture is in fact between the glass, you can get ahold of the manufacturer to determine if you can make a warranty claim.
Depending on the age of your windows and the conditions impacting the leak, it may make sense to start searching for replacement windows. Insulation is one of the most important features of your windows, and if that is inhibited it can impact your heating and cooling costs.
